Ancient Greek Pottery
How does Ancient Greek Pottery tell a story? Ancient Greek Pottery has been around for millennia. Their grace and beauty are admired by many civilizations. Watch the video, Making Greek Vases, as it shows the creation process of this fascinating art form. Play these tutorials and choose one that best suits you.  If you don't have these materials, no worries. Crayons, colored pencils, markers, or paint will work. Watered-down food coloring and a Q-tip can apply some color. Students can fold a paper in half and draw the shape outline on one side of their vase. Keeping it folded, they will cut it out using symmetry, If done correctly, they should have a paper vase ready to decorate. The important thing is to have fun!

How do we use arches and domes? St. Basil's Cathedral is found in Moscow, the capital of Russia. This cathedral is a dazzling display of rhythmic shapes and elaborate patterns. It is a virtual feast for the eyes. Watch the travel guide video and the tutorials. Using the drawings below create a symbolic architectural cathedral of your own.

African Masks inspired by Lois Mailou Jones
What is variety? What are abstract shapes? What is collage? What are arbitrary colors? The inspirational artworks of Lois Mailou Jones display African masks as symbols of strength and courage. Get to know the artist by watching the video. Then create an African mask using one of the tutorials. Tutorial 1 is a 2D oil pastel on paper. Use whatever media you have. If you have cardboard, try tutorial 2.  It can be painted or colored with markers. Remember to make it your own with unique variety of angular and curvilinear shapes with overlapping to create depth.

Mexican Mirrors -Hojalatas
What is Folk art? It is art that is created by artists  who have no formal art training. It is generally made by hand and is often designed to be functional. What are bold colors? What is radial symmetry? Mexican mirrors incorporating embossed tin frames with bright colors. They have been functional art since the 1500’s. Mexican hojalatas (tin art work) are created by stamping, punching and cutting tin shapes. Tin has been a metal of choice because it is inexpensive and easy to emboss. For our project, we will use aluminum foil. Watch the tutorials below and have fun with these radial designs.
